600 sq ft · baseline pricing · no removal allowance

Assumes ordinary access and no slope or heavy-vehicle surcharge. Base rebuilding, drains, retaining work, permits, and unusual site conditions need separate pricing. Actual bids may fall outside this range.

Asphalt cost for common driveway sizes

These examples use the baseline state setting, standard vehicle use, and no slope surcharge. The replacement column includes the model's $1.50 per sq ft allowance for removing existing asphalt, before the range is applied.

Modeled asphalt paving budgets, not observed contractor bids
Driveway areaPaving, no removalPaving + asphalt removal
600 sq ft$3,200 to $4,000$4,100 to $5,000
1,000 sq ft$5,200 to $6,400$6,600 to $8,100
1,500 sq ft$7,600 to $9,300$9,600 to $11,700

For a 1,000 sq ft driveway, the paving-only range works out to 5.20 to 6.40 dollars per sq ft. A contractor's installed rate depends on the actual scope, not just area.

Why a local quote can differ

The same area can cost more when a crew must remove a failing base, haul debris farther, work around limited access, or change the drainage. Labor and material supply also vary. Our state factors are broad model assumptions, not live ZIP-code bids or averages from our contractor directory.

What's behind the estimate?

Budget = area Ă— (asphalt rate Ă— size factor + removal allowance) Ă— state factor. We show 90% to 110% of that result, rounded to the nearest $100. That band is a planning convention, not a statistical confidence interval.

The model's asphalt base rate is $6 per sq ft. Its size factor is 1.00 at 600 sq ft and decreases gradually to 0.90 at 2,000 sq ft; small projects carry a mobilization adjustment. The quick tool uses the same size and removal rules as the main estimator. Its scope is full paving, not sealcoating or a thin overlay.

The satellite estimator asks additional questions about slope, vehicle use, and the work you want, so its result can differ from the simpler budget above. Neither tool inspects your subgrade or designs a pavement section.

Pricing assumptions last updated 2026-02-17. These are DrivewaySatellite model inputs. They are not attributed to an industry price survey.

Define the paving scope

Confirm measured area, removal and disposal, base repair, mix, and compacted asphalt thickness. A thicker pavement or rebuilt base is a different job from an overlay.

Resolve the site issues

Ask where water will go and how the street and garage transitions will meet. Use the slope calculator and vehicle clearance tool to prepare your questions.

Separate the extras

Request individual prices for drains, edging, retaining work, permits, and any base rebuilding. Confirm access requirements, cleanup, payment stages, and written warranty terms.

For construction context, the Asphalt Institute's private driveway guidance covers subgrade preparation, drainage, and full-depth paving. It is not the source of our prices, and a full-depth section differs from asphalt over an aggregate base.

Asphalt driveway cost questions

How much does asphalt cost per square foot?

Our planning model starts at $6 per sq ft, then adjusts for project size, state, and removal. For a baseline 1,000 sq ft project without removal, the modeled total is $5,200 to $6,400. This is an installed paving allowance, not a material-only price or a verified local quote.

How much does a 1,000 sq ft asphalt driveway cost?

The baseline model gives $5,200 to $6,400 for paving with no removal, or $6,600 to $8,100 with existing asphalt removal. Base reconstruction, drainage, difficult access, and other site work can put the actual price outside these ranges.

How much does a 1,500 sq ft asphalt driveway cost?

The baseline model gives $7,600 to $9,300 without removal, or $9,600 to $11,700 with existing asphalt removal. Select your state assumption in the calculator to see its effect on the budget.

Why does asphalt paving cost more in some locations?

Labor, material supply, transport, disposal, contractor availability, and project requirements vary. Our state adjustment is a broad assumption; it cannot capture each city's current bids. Compare itemized quotes for the same area and construction scope.

Is resurfacing cheaper than replacing the driveway?

An overlay avoids some removal work, but it depends on the condition and elevations of the existing pavement and base. Have a contractor assess movement, cracking, drainage, and garage clearance before treating resurfacing as an equivalent option. Choose the appropriate project type in the satellite estimator.

Do I have to share my email to see the estimate?

No. You can use the calculators and see the budget without sending a contractor request. The results offer a separate “Email me contractor options” action if you want help checking local availability.

Want local contractors to price this project?

Measure your driveway on the map, review the estimate, then choose “Email me contractor options” in your results. We check who can help in your area. You choose whether to send the request; there is no guaranteed number of available contractors.
